Matching paint for repairs
If you damage a painted component on your aircraft, you can always get a replacement part from Extreme Flight or one of its dealers. However, some parts may be temporarily out of stock or you may be able to save money by doing the repair yourself.
If you have chips or deep scratches which require filling, we recommend a polyester-based body filler putty such as "glazing putty" or "icing putty" from the car body repair industry. These products can fill in cracks and scratches. Spray on a few layers of primer such as Rustoleum "Filler Primer" or "SEM high build primer-surfacer", allow to fully dry, and sand to 320 grit level smoothness. All of these products are available online, please google for availability and current dealers.
Your repair is now ready for paint. Paint, primers, surfacers and other products may be hazardous to your health. Consult and follow the safety information which accompanies these products.
Only few companies offer ready-mixed exact color matches to Oracover/Ultracote film colors. One such company is KlassKote. They produce a very expensive, very durable, high-end epoxy paint which requires a large investment and specialty equipment. We have used their paint and it is excellent.
If you are looking for a cheaper, less-complex paint solution, we recommend RAL matched paints. RAL is a color-identification standard common to much of the world. These colors are not matched exactly to Oracover, but because the RAL system contains so many different shades, modelers have been able to identify many very close matches. Not every color of Oracover has a match, because the RAL system does not identify any pearls or metallics. Below is a chart of very close matches in the RAL system. You can find pre-mixed spray cans of RAL color paint in most countries by googling. In the USA, one supplier is LVP Paints.
